Flotsam/Jetsam at in/Future
Toronto, ON
Flotsam/Jetsam was as a granular presence along the beaches of Ontario Place’s West Island, a landscape work composed of dream fragments from an earlier, more optimistic future.
Featured at Art Spin’s in/Future festival at Ontario Place, 2016, Flotsam/Jetsam took the form of real and imagined remnants, debris, and detritus strewn among the stones and pebbles of the site’s beaches.
Composed of hundreds of plaster casts of architectural miniatures, Flotsam/Jetsam invited engagement and closer inspection, an archaeological expression that revealed itself with attentiveness, as mementos of our collective utopian aspirations and their potential shortcomings.
The shape of the work shifted over the course of the in/Future exhibition with the steady washing of the waves, and the movements and scavenging activities of visitors.
