Gala Square

Toronto, ON

Gala Square provides a generous new public space in the heart of Toronto’s vibrant Entertainment District. Designed to address the gala event potential of the TIFF Bell Lightbox and the Princess of Wales Theatre, Gala Square, with its subtly undulating red ‘curtain’ and gently inclined planes, creates a backdrop for the theatre of urban life.

By day, Gala Square is a place for a coffee, a chat with friends, or a stop along a welcoming bench. By night, Gala Square is a meeting place ahead of dinner, after the theatre, and before the nightclub. Simple elements (a ramp, a podium, and a curtain) provide a base upon which functional pieces (a bench, tables and chairs, and lighting) are overlaid. Etched stone ramps, a hardwood bench, and a perforated steel curtain combine to create a richly textured experience.

A modest pavilion accommodates a café for service on the podium. Existing trees are preserved along the perimeter of the site and new and relocated trees provide a shaded grove along the eastern incline of Gala Square.

Gala Square is a contribution to the public realm, framing, and highlighting the best features of city living.
